At Schooner Fish & Chips, we take gluten-free very seriously! We are gluten-free verified by the Canadian Celiac Association. We use separate fryers and designated areas of our kitchen to uphold this commitment to you. With over 40 years of experience, we use top-quality ingredients to develop a recipe to match the taste and feel of our famous traditional fish and chips.
Linda P., a really good friend of ours, was diagnosed with having Celiac. Linda went for years before finally finding out her problems were from foods containing gluten ingredients. My husband and I had the pleasure of spending a weekend away with Linda and her husband, Ron. We saw for ourselves what Linda had to deal with everyday. The restaurants we visited had no knowledge of the questions Linda was asking. It seemed she ate plain lettuce and chicken the entire trip. We felt terrible for Linda and thought why couldn’t she have poutine or fish n chips that were gluten-free?
We got home that weekend and bought gluten-free ingredients, fired up the back fryer and cooked gluten-free fish, poutine and coleslaw. Linda enjoyed it so much that we decided to serve gluten-free food and haven’t stopped since. We've even expanded our selection to add gravy, mini donuts, and more!
It has now been a several years since we first served gluten-free food and I feel it's our best product to date. Combined with top quality ingredients and over 40 years of experience we have revised our recipe to taste like our famous fish n chips! I am proud to be serving gluten-free battered fish & chips to the Durham Region.
